We at CTT have compiled some information from years of experience that will help you save time and money, as well as an over all better experience and understanding when taking your vehicle in for repairs.
It doesn’t have to be scary or nerve racking when your vehicle is giving you trouble.
Here are some tech tips on things you can do to help your trip to the local shop go smoother.
1: Before even calling around to find a shop.
Today’s electronically controlled vehicles are common to have intermittent problems that are hard to duplicate. By following the procedure below, it can help save time and costly diagnostics.
Take some time to get the information you need to explain the problem in detail.
- If the problem is intermittent. Put a noted pad and pen in the vehicle and right down detailed information on the problem.
- Did the problem occur after driving in stop and go traffic, after driving 2 hours, when vehicle is cold in the morning or after warmed up, when the weather is cold or hot.
- Was the problem intermittent? If so, when did it occur and when did it clear itself up.
- Was there a check engine light or any other dash lights that came on and did they go out or stay on.
- Were any other repairs or accessories added recently before the problem occurred?
- Add any information that you think may be helpful. Keep in mind, there is no dumb information.
2: Ask friends, family and co workers for referrals.
It is always better if you can get a referral but reviews are always another good alternative.
3: Make sure the shop can perform the work that you are needing. Today’s vehicles are very complex and often, their is specialty shops for different repairs. Sometimes the shop will sublet the work out to a specialty shop. It is better to have the repair done at the shop you are dealing with. The better you can explain the problem, will help the service adviser you call to determine whether this is something they can do or refer you to another specialty shop and avoid going to a few different shops to resolve the complaint.
4: Noises are one of the hardest problems to diagnose and are often diagnosed wrong.
As a technicians we are constantly listening for any noises that are not normal. This does not mean that it is the noise that you are wanting repaired. By following these steps below. It will help get the noise repaired correctly, the first time.
- Describe the noise in detail
- Does it happen when hitting a bump, when turning on an accessory, at higher speeds or lower speeds, when accelerating or decelerating, turning corners etc.
- It it a chirp, growling, buzzing, ticking, grinding, rattle etc.
- It is best to ask the technician to go for a ride and duplicate the noise
5: Don’t be in a hurry when dropping your vehicle off. Leave plenty of time to explain the problem in detail and even go for a test drive if necessary. Try and drop the vehicle off your self. Often the problem does not get described properly when another person is dropping off the vehicle. If you can not, then it is a good idea to give the shop a call and describe the problem in detail.
6: Do not be afraid to give the shop a call back if you think of some new information that may help them with the complaint.
We have test driven vehicles for a few days without being able to duplicate a problem, and then the customer has remembered something that allows us to duplicate the problem.
7: Once the vehicle has been checked out and they give you an estimate for the repair. Make sure you understand the work they are going to be doing and that it is going to resolve the problem you were experiencing. Ask for a worst case scenario if something has to be torn down further to inspect.
8: As with dropping the vehicle off. Leave lots of time for the technician or service adviser to explain what they have repaired and if there is any maintenance or further repairs that may need to be done. Don’t be in a hurry. Try and pick the vehicle up in person instead of having someone else pick up the vehicle as sometimes, things get lost in the translation. we know it is sometimes hard to do this with busy schedules and work hours. If this can not be done, it is a good idea to give the shop a call later to find out this information.

If you have 4WD Chevrolet or GMC Diesel Truck with the Allison Transmission, we recommend reading this article.
This article addresses a code PO735, typically after driving at higher speeds. May also have a trans overtemp code.
Conditions that usually set code: This code will usually set when you are driving at higher speeds and you feel the transmission down shift or neutral out, followed by a check engine light. It can also set when pulling a trailer at freeway speeds, then accelerating to pass. This tends to happen more on vehicles that are used for towing and or have been modified for extra horsepower. When this code sets. It puts the transmission into a fail safe mode and will eliminate 5th gear and lockup. This will cause the transmission temperature to rise and get hot. We recommend pulling over as soon as possible and not driving like this or damage to the transmission could occur.
Immediate action: We recommend pulling over to a safe place and checking for codes. If you get a code PO735 5th gear ratio. We recommend writing the code down for future reference and clearing the code. ( We recommend buying a code reader and keeping it in the vehicle for this purpose. One that can also clear codes) Check your transmission fluid condition and level. If the fluid level is good and the color is a clear pink and does not smell burnt . Then check the transfer case fluid. This will require getting under the vehicle, so only do so if the vehicle is in a safe place to do so and is secured from rolling. If the transfer case or transmission fluid is low or burnt. We recommend towing vehicle to the nearest shop.

There are several things to consider before purchasing a vehicle but we think this should be at the top.

Know what you are purchasing!
Yes CVT, Constant Velocity Transmission. Store this in your phone and make it one of the top considerations when buying a vehicle. A CVT Transmission is a belt driven transmission that is picking up momentum in the automotive industry and found in the majority of small to medium sized vehicles today.
The difference between a cvt transmission from traditional automatic transmissions is that they don’t have gears that provide steps between low and high speed. Instead, the majority of them work via a pair of variable-diameter, cone-shaped pulleys connected by a steel or composite belt.
Do some research on them and determine if this is a transmission you want in your vehicle. We will go over some of the pros and cons of the cvt transmission in this blog, but a quick search on the internet will bring up loads of information. This is one of the first things we want you to research when buying a vehicle and narrowing down what your next purchase will be. We are still getting customers in on a regular basis that had no idea that they had a cvt transmission or that they even existed. This is why we are going to revisit this topic.
Pros: They are smaller and light weight compared to the traditional transmissions and are designed to improve fuel economy. Typically you get a smoother shifting transmission as well.
Cons: They are a weaker transmission and tend to have a lower torque delivery. They tend to do ok under normal driving but lack on harder accelerations. We service the Modesto and surrounding area and are seeing some of them fail at low mileage and come with a pricey repair tag. At this point, there aren’t a lot of quality parts available to repair them and we are having to install dealer units.
Our advise on buying a vehicle with a cvt transmission.
When to buy a vehicle equipped with a cvt transmission.
If you test drive the vehicle and are happy with the way it drives and how it transfers the power under harder throttle. You are not planning on keeping the vehicle past the warranty period or buying an extended warranty. This may be a good option for you.
When not to buy a vehicle with a cvt transmission.
If you plan on keeping the vehicle past the warranty period and like the way a traditional transmission shifts and the way the power is transferred. This may not be the option for you. Reselling the vehicle when it comes time, may be an issue also if the consumer has done their research or had any dealings with a cvt in the past.
In summary, cvts are here to stay and a large percentage of the vehicles come with them. As time goes on, the parts will become better and more accessible bringing the cost to repair them down. They should also become more reliable and the life expectancy should increase. For now, we at CTT Transmissions would not recommend purchasing a vehicle with one unless you are going to sell it or trade it in before the warranty period is up.
How do I know which vehicles have a cvt?
We would not recommend relying on the salesman or owner of the vehicle as they may not even know if it has one. A quick search on the internet using different terms such as the year, make, model and engine size asking if the vehicle comes with a cvt should produce several sites with this information. They have been out for a while now but they have gotten really popular in 2013 with the majority of the manufactures using them, mostly in the compact vehicles.
If you have a cvt transmission and it fails at low mileage but is out of the standard warranty, contact the dealer and see if they have extended the warranty on it before having it replaced.

The 700R4 transmission is one of the most popular transmissions used in hot rod applications today. Hot rod enthusiasts like it as it has a low first gear and an overdrive gear. It drops the rpms approximately 600 rpms in high gear vs a turbo 350 or 400 3speed transmission. It was used from 1982 to 1992 in a wide variety of vehicles. The best year to use for performance is 1988 up. The stock transmission had many issues and we were seeing them fail at low mileage. Some updates were done over the years from the factory to help them last but most were not addressed. However there are several updates available aftermarket that make them perform and last much better.
We have perfected this transmission over the years and have a unique method of making them perform at their best in a wide variety of vehicles. Transmission Tech Tip: Ford 7.3 Diesel Transmission overheating
7.3 to 6.0 transmission cooler swap
We get calls often on the 7.3 diesel with automatic transmission overheating when pulling steep inclines with trailers. There can be several factors that will cause a transmission to overheat. It should always be diagnosed first. The temp sensor could be faulty, the fluid could be low or need to be changed or there could be internal problems. The 7.3 diesel tends be under powered and can cause extra pressure and heat in the transmission when trying to pull steep hills, but replacing the transmission cooler with the newer 6.0 diesel cooler makes a huge difference. We recently replaced the cooler on a F350 with a 7.3 that was reaching temperatures of 240 degrees when pulling their 40 ft. toy hauler up the grapevine. They called us and were very impressed as they pulled the same hill under the same conditions and only reached 185 degrees. You can add deeper pans with fins and we recommend a synthetic fluid but the cooler will make the biggest difference and is a must on the 7.3 engine.

Transmission Service Tech Tip
We get a lot of calls every day with questions on servicing a transmission. It can be very confusing when inquiring on when to service a transmission, how it should be done and how much it costs. We hope that this will answer some of your questions and feel free to give us a call at (209) 551-4050 if you have any further questions. Why do transmission repair shops offer a transmission flush?
Older transmissions did not have solenoids, and the valves were not as prone to sticking as the newer transmission valves. Some also had drain plugs so you could get more fluid out. Then in the 80’s and 90’s, car makers started using electronic transmissions that had solenoids and smaller springs in the valve body which were more prone to sticking. These electronic transmission also came with smaller bearings that failed if not properly lubricated. These changes created a greater need for a complete fluid change, which lead to the development of transmission flushing machines which do a more thorough job of changing the transmission fluid.
If you take a cup of coffee and pour half of it out, then fill the cup back up with water, it still looks like coffee. The same is with the transmission fluid, if you only remove a portion of the used fluid and then top it off with clean fluid. The result is that you still have dirty fluid in your transmission, that is not lubricating properly.
Can a flush hurt the transmission?
We use a machine that does not put any pressure on the transmission, it will not hurt the transmission in any way. We drive every vehicle before and after servicing them to make sure it is operating properly. If we feel that the fluid is too burnt or there is existing transmission problems, we will not perform the service.
How often should I service my transmission?
If your vehicle is still under the factory warranty or if you have an extended warranty. It is very important to service the transmission within their recommended service periods. This should be in their contract and/or in your owner’s manual. The intervals change with different types of vehicles. Important! Remember to keep your receipts for all services done as they may ask for these, should you need any repairs done under factory or extended warranty, in the future. They may even ask for engine oil change receipts, even though you are having a transmission problem, so it is a good idea to keep all your vehicle maintenance receipts together.
(We recommend checking the condition of your fluid every year or 12,000 miles with overdrive transmissions, and sooner if your vehicle is used for heavy towing or over heated for any reason). Your transmission fluid should be a pink color on most vehicles and should not smell burnt. If it is smells or black, it is time to take it in and have your transmission checked. Servicing may be recommended after the transmission is checked for other problems.
What is the difference between a basic service and a complete flush?
On a basic service, the pan is removed and the filter is cleaned or replaced. Most transmissions only allow you to change about 4-5 quarts of fluid with this method, they hold about 12-14 quarts. With a flushing machine, we are able to flush the fluid out of the cooler and torque converter to do a more thorough job.
Should the filter be changed when servicing the transmission?
Yes. We recommend removing the pan and changing or cleaning the filter where applicable. Some filters are internal and can not be changed without disassembling the transmission which is not feasible.
“You wouldn’t change your engine oil without replacing oil your filter, nor should you with your transmission.”
There are a few transmissions that the filter is internal and can not be changed without disassembling the transmission. In this case we recommend monitoring your fluid condition even more often to prevent any sticking valves or solenoids. Honda is common to have this type of transmission on some of their models. Call and one of our techs can advise you what type you have.
Will a transmission Service fix my transmission problem?
If you are having a transmission problem like shifting issues, slipping, etc. We do not recommend wasting your money on having it serviced until you have it checked out by a knowledgeable transmission technician.
Very rarely will a transmission service fix a problem unless you just have a valve sticking intermittently, however it is very important to keep your transmission properly maintained to help avoid problems. Most of today’s transmissions do not have band adjustments, however some of the Dodge Pickups and many older vehicles have them and a band adjustment help with some problems.
If you are having a transmission problem, first check your fluid level and color of the fluid. If it is low, try topping it off or bring it by and we can do it for you. Low fluid can cause several problems. If it was low, have it checked for leaks. If the fluid is full but very dirty, this may be the sign of a transmission problem and should be checked out.
For example, we do not recommend servicing the transmission if it is slipping, having any other issues or any transmission codes. A service is more for maintenance and will rarely repair a problem. Changing the transmission fluid at this point could make your situation worse and be a waste of money. You are better off having the transmission diagnosed at this point.
Should I use a stop leak product in my transmission?
No, we do not recommend putting any stop leak products in your transmission. They are designed to swell the seals which may fix your leak but will also swell the internal seals and could do more harm than good, to your transmission. If you are broken down and have no other alternative and plan on rebuilding the transmission very soon anyway, then this would be a time that it could possibly be used. A transmission rebuild includes replacing the seals anyway.
There are basically three different ways to service a transmission.
1: Basic service, includes dropping the pan, cleaning or changing the filter, cleaning the pan and adding fluid. This typically only changes about 4 quarts of fluid.
We recommend this on some of the older vehicles that are not computer controlled.
2: Transmission Flush, Flushes the fluid out of the transmission, cooler, lines and torque converter, (pan does not get removed and filter does not get changed).
We recommend this when a full service can not be done or a full service has recently been done and the fluid just go hot for some reason.
3: Transmission Flush and Service, does both of above.
This is the method we recommend if applicable to your vehicle. We call it the ultimate transmission service.
